Meet Boris… Jenny Clack discusses the first tetrapods

May 19th, 2009

If this arouses your curiousity, you may want to read Your inner fish by Neil Shubin or At the water’s edge by Carl Zimmer. The former is more up to date, and includes Tiktaalik roseae (Shubin was one of the team that found Tiktaalik), while the latter is a great read that talks about both the transition onto the land (Devonian tetrapods) and a transition back to the water (the ancient whales).

Miller-Urey revisited, and Tiktaalik sheds light on our ears

October 17th, 2008
  • The Miller-Urey experiment may have been resurrected. Following Miller’s death in 2007, one of his assistants found that the substances created in the experiment had been stored, and has subjected them to investigation using modern tools. • Tiktaalik roseae, one of those pesky transitionals that Creationists deny the existence of, is letting scientists look into the evolution of the cranial endoskeleton. Carl Zimmer has more at the Loom, and Science Daily also covers the story.
  • ScienceBlogging also talks about Tiktaalik, this time in relation to how fish grew feet. It includes a discussion of work carried out by Neil Shubin and his team, who also authored the paper discussed in the point above. Read more at ScienceBlogging.
