Why is Obama so scary?

The Nobel Prize for Not Being George W. Bush goes to…

October 9th, 2009

The Nobel Prize for Peace has been awarded to Barack Obama. Despite rather liking what I’ve seen of him so far, I can’t help but think this is more than a little premature. Yes, he has given a couple of good speeches, but is that all it takes? Shouldn’t they have waited until after he had signed a disarmament treaty? Or perhaps after some major summits between Palestinians and Israelis?

I was in a chat room when this news broke. After I expressed my surprise and wondered if he should have achieved more before winning such an award someone told me “Obama gives people of the world HOPE love for the possibility of peace… After 8 years of that horror Bush, Obama is like a breath of fresh air”.

That’s when the title of this post occurred to me.

T-8 hours 33 minutes and counting

January 20th, 2009

It’s now about 8 hours and 33 minutes until we see long overdue regime change in the United States of America. I’ve never watched a Presidential inauguration before, but intend to be up at 02.30 to watch it.

Good bye George W… And good riddance!

Upcoming regime change in the United States

November 5th, 2008

The US election is over, and Barack Obama has been elected to be the next President.

For the first time, whites in the USA had to ask “Can a black man represent me?”, a question that blacks have always had to ask of white candidates. It seems many whites said “yes”. The “Bradley effect“, if it exists, wasn’t enough to sway the vote. Hopefully the election of an African American to the US’s highest office will help to improve race relations in that country. The disenfranchisement of the poor, the black, and other likely Democrat voters, which has been entirely real, has also proved to be insufficient to stop the right result. » Read more: Upcoming regime change in the United States

Rachel Maddow’s US election scrapbook

November 4th, 2008

Rachel Maddow has had a quite spectacular climb in the ratings since getting her own show earlier this year. In this video she presents some of the highlights of the US electoral campaign – be they humorous or cringe worthy. It would be nice if one of the Australian channels picked up her show. Same with Jon Stewart’s Daily Show (previously on SBS) and the Colbert Report.

You’ll find a lot of Maddow’s clips on YouTube.

The gentle face of racism on the US electoral trail

October 12th, 2008

Over in the US at the moment the election campaign is getting nastier. People at McCain/Palin rallies have been shouting out “TERRORIST!”, “KILL HIM!”, “BOMB OBAMA!”, etc at the mention of Barrack Obama’s name. Republican speakers are emphasizing Obama’s middle name, trying to revive the “Obama is a Muslim” lie and get some goo ol’ American hatred going. McCain did, briefly, show some integrity recently when he stopped a woman saying that Obama was an Arab, and he also said he was a decent man of whom people shouldn’t be afraid. Apart from that, the Republicans really are playing to the hate.

A video has appeared on CBS’s website (and appears embedded below) showing a recent Palin rally, and shows an elderly man holding a stuffed toy monkey and putting an Obama sticker across the monkey’s forehead. The racism is pretty clear. The video shows the moment that man then realises that he’s on camera, after which he crumples the sticker in his hand, and passes the monkey to a kid he didn’t know. I suspect the guy really isn’t that bad – he seems to have a conscience – but the hate campaign the Republicans have unleashed pushes people further to the right.

An advert will play below before the actual footage.
